Hi
Not that I don't like You! But I don't like Bots splashing my posts all over the internetz.
So, please, if you want to read my journal, introduce yourself here, and friend me. Then hopefully, I will get around to friending you and then you can read things.
Oh, and when I read My Friends Page, I go back 20-40- sometimes 60 messages. I have Lots of People I've friended. So I might not have read That Real Important Post you put up. If you feel I Need to Read it. Let me know. LJ has a messaging system. I do read my messages.
Thanks
Bai

Our Governor is being Pound Foolish Again! As a time when people need cheap ways to get outta town, he is planning to close off one of the better cheaper was to do it, Our California State Parks.
For me this is particularly hurtful. My mother is stuck in a wheelchair because of a stroke. And she lives in Santa Cruz, an area that is surrounded by State Parks and Beaches. One of the things she loves is to go to the local state parks and beaches and enjoy Nature. We can't go "Hiking", but we can go along the paved paths and give her redwoods or butterflys and just plain beauty. Almost none of this is federal land, this is all state parks and beaches. They are all subject to closure.
The link is here. Thanks to
zahraa who got it from her friend
cyan_blue .
And while you are there, try to give some money to the California State Park Foundation too. They help with park maintenance and acquisition and are all around good people.
Thank you!

As many of you know, the Bush Fires in Australia have been just terrible. Almost 200 lives lost (and growing), hundreds of homes lost, communities gone. This is a Disaster of the First Order.
So the Australian Red Cross needs help. The usual $$ donations are requested. Give early and often. Seriously, go Now. You know you need to. Thank you.
As some of you know, I also hang out on Ravelry, a lovely site for Knitters to hang out. If you knit, go and sign up. But the important thing to know now, is that Knitters are international. And a lot of them live in Australia. Our hearts go out to them. And they are putting together support projects. If you love to knit, besides joining Ravelry, you should go a check out the fund raiser over here. Serendipity (serendipitygirl in Ravelry) has put together a lovely fundraiser.
So do go and help the Australians. They could use it, and also check out the neat thing that Serendipity has done.
And if you love to knit, go and get on the Ravelry waiting list. It's like Live Journal and Facebook, only with more Knitting and Crocheting!

I am finally done with my first knitting project in 20 years. And it looks like a scarf!
A close up of the Scarf

It hasn't been blocked yet. And I'm still debating as to whether I will or not. But I need it for Gallifrey One and I don't want to worry about it being dry in time. So if it does get blocked it will be after Gally.
Hope to see some of you there.

I still have to Bind Off, tuck in all the joins, and attach the fringe. Thus the 95 percent.
It's length was measured by doubling it and the doubled length is 6 feet 1 inch. I mention this primarily because Little Harold is 6 feet 1. So the knitted part of The Scarf is Twice is long as Harold is tall. *giggle* And Yes, that means it is 12 feet 2 inches before fringe and blocking. Though I'm currently not planning to make it stretch any further in blocking. Though it may do that naturally.
There were several places where I oopseed and went two rows over what I should have done. But I like it. No one who knows the Doctor will question why I have such a ridiculously long colorful scarf.
As usual cross posted to the usually suspects.

Actually hit 75 percent during Loscon, but wasn't online, so couldn't post it. Soon the knitting will be done, then it is weaving in the ends and putting on the fringe. Then finding a way to take a photo of the thing.
It is already down to my feet, over the neck and back down to my feet! I think I'll have enough to trip over! :D
And one friend is already requesting a Season 18 scarf! She doesn't knit, but she makes nice jewelry. We will have to talk exchanges.

I measured it - 6 ft 1 in long. So the final will be a touch over 12 feet, not including fringe. Yeah, bit short of a Dr Who scarf, but I want to wear this thing, not be killed by it. :D
I know I really need to take a picture. But even at 6 feet I have no good place to show it off. I have a busy flowered bed quilt so laying it on the bed won't work.

I drove everyone to the polls and we voted. They were saying they already had over 100 people voting at our voting place!
There was no line, so we were in and out quickly.
This was Moose's First Time Voting (he's only 19)!!!!!
Moose and I voted No on 8. I know I voted for Obama and I think Moose did too.
Dad was being ultraconservative self and voted yes on 8 and for McCain. I hope he is disappointed tomorrow. :)

Because I think I can - Let's see if I can get this sucker to work -

Yep, the first 25 percent of my beasty is done and it's looking pretty good for someone who hasn't knitted in 25 year.
But I think after I get done with this I'm gonna want to do something more complicated than a straight Knit until colour change.

Since it has been an age since I've knitted, first I had to remember how to cast on. Took a few tries, but I finally found a method that my fingers liked, so I figured it must be the one I did all the time. Any path it worked.
Since I'm using Worsted weight wool, I did a test knit of 10 stitches,, so I could get a feeling for the gauge. I am using #7 needles, too. At first figured 5 to the inch. So I cast on 50 for the 10 inches, only it's knitting out to 11 inches. This sucker is fat enough as it is, so I pull out my first four rows and cast on 45.
Now that I've knitted 8 rows, it is STILL coming out at about 11 inches. I give up.
8 rows are about an inch long, which sounds about right, so I won't be making the row count any shorter.
Now I have to get a row counter, as I can tell right now that I can't count the rows for love or money. I did put a dot on the back of one of my needles to I can tell when I've finished two rows. Probably put the row counter there as well. Eight I could figure out, 30+ won't be nearly as easy.

Steven Brust
skzbrust is facing major medical bills and the possible loss of his house. More information is in this linked post. If you'd like to help, there's a donation link in the linked post.
If you go to his journal you'll get ALL the details. He's out of the worst water, but it's still mighty hot there.

There was a Whole Lotta Shaking Goin' On. 5.6 magnitude Earthquake about 15 miles from here. Luckily it was up in the hills in a scarcely inhabilited area.
We shook, the light/fan above us shook even more, a few cabinet doors popped open, a few things ended up on the floor. Nothing seemed to be broken.
Moose was in a evening class. He forgot his thumbdrive in the evacuation. Hopefully, he can find it tomorrow am.
We did get some feeling of Loma Prieta Deja Vu. Luckily, it wasn't nearly as strong.

In going through the Mythcon Auction Leftovers, I'm finding a bunch that will probably Never get auctioned off at Mythcon. So, unless someone asks for them now, I will be donating them to my local public library so they can make some money off of them. They are -
Star Trek - New Earth - Books 2-6 out of a series of 6 books (so you would need to go find Book 1)
Star Trek - Deep Space Nine the following books -
Antimatter
Proud Helios
Saratoga
The Tempest
Betrayal
Bloodletter
The all look like decent Star Trek Books if you like that kind of thing.
I would ask that you pay for postage, plus anything you feel like donating to the Society. These were auction items.
If you are interested, either post here or e-mail me at mythsoc at sbcglobal.net

If you are a SF Bay Area resident, perhaps you can join the CC26 crew at Bill and Carole's home this weekend.
It should be a relaxing chance to meet, socialize, and help folks interested in volunteering find compatible departments.
There is no big business agenda for this event -- it is mostly social/networking!
I will be there with the usual Treasury Blather, trying to sell memberships for those who haven't bought yet. I think that's the Most Work we'll see anywhere.
ETA: Event is in Sunnyvale.

WARNING - Terry has badly reinvented the Square Wheel, with SHARP Edges. Even if you are Pre-Regged, Everyone is required to appear at the Reg Table and get their picture taken. So no picking up someone else's badge. Plus they have ONE picture taking spot with one Standard Digital Camera. Which means that they take a few pictures, download them, then take a few more.
There was no one really there when I got there and there would have been a HALF HOUR WAIT.
I don't want to think about what it will be like when HUNDREDS show up at registration this evening.
I expect an angry riot.
They had also lost our CostumeCon Fan Table request, so I am debating whether I will be at the convention at all. Since I didn't have the Harolds with me to have their pictures taken and so could not get their badges. So at this point, since this evening registration will probably be UGLY, we'll just blow off the $105 we can't really afford and stay home.
There are First Cons and there are STOOPID cons, where advise and good ideas are ignored, so one can do it "My Way". This con is looking like it will belong in the later style of con.
But it will take several people convincing me that this is a FABULOUS convention, before they will see my $$ again.
